Open position at muon facilities

Positions advertised in the µSR community:

At PSI and University of Zurich, open until May 18, 2026:

  • The Head of the PSI Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences (CNM) and the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Zurich (UZH) are jointly looking for the head of one its laboratories:

*** Head of the Laboratory for Muon Spin Spectroscopy (LMU) at CNM / Professor for Muon Spectroscopy at the UZH Department of Physics ***

LMU is responsible for the scientific exploitation of the Swiss Muon Source, SMuS, where it operates seven muon instruments and runs a world-leading muon science user program welcoming about 200 Swiss and international scientific users every year. The LMU head manages about 20 permanent scientific, technical, and administrative staff, as well as associated students and postdoctoral researchers in two research groups focusing on bulk Mu-SR studies and low-energy muons, respectively.

The Department of Physics at UZH covers a broad spectrum of research activities in the fields of particle physics, astroparticle physics, and condensed matter physics. The professorship for muon spectroscopy will specifically strengthen research activities in condensed matter physics while simultaneously providing important points of contact with particle physics. We are seeking candidates who are experts in developing and using muon spectroscopy for the advancement of material science, for example for quantum or energy materials. The research program of this new professorship will be able to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the unique SMuS facility at PSI and to develop it further.

PSI and UZH are collaborating to push the frontiers of muon science through two new projects, for which they jointly applied for and received major funding amounts:

    - IMPACT is a major upgrade of PSI's already world-leading muon facility via the installation of HIMB - the high intensity muon beam - that will produce 100-fold higher muon rates. This project is already well-underway and will install HIMB in 2028, more info: https://www.psi.ch/en/impact

    - NCCR Muoniverse - a new National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) - will establish a broad interdisciplinary network of 30 research teams from Swiss universities, research institutions and, museums, and as well as from CERN. The aim is to use muons for science and society by bridging discovery and application, more info: https://www.muoniverse.ch

In other words, there has never been a better time to start a research group in muon science!
